HTC readying Android tablet with 1080p video recording?

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Thu April 15, 2010

HTC may pack 1080p and 5.1 audio into slate

HTC South Africa's Quinton Leigh has reportedly slipped word that the company is developing a high-end Android tablet. The device, which could alternately be a very high-end smartphone, would have 1080p video recording and would even use a new Yamaha chipset to output 5.1-channel surround sound. Leigh also implied that there would be 3G access built-in as it might not be suitable for the high prices of South African cell data.

The executive didn't say to PhoneReport when the unconfirmed tablet would be ready but did put out a timeline for smartphones to get many of the same upgrades. Full 1080p movie recording could reach HTC smartphones by spring 2011, he said, while phones with 14.4Mbps HSPA+ could arrive as soon as this summer.

While still rumor, the move could reflect an attempt by HTC to get back into tablet-like devices after two years or more of absence. It last had significant entries with Windows Mobile UMPCs like the Advantage and Shift, neither of which sold in significant numbers due both to very high pricing as well as the limited utility of Windows Mobile on a large device. The iPad is suspected of putting pressure on HTC as it risks losing a category it once championed.

    1080p but????

Ok so it will record in 1080p. You know how much storage space that will take! Either they will do massive compression or your flash drive will fill up in 10 minutes.

So if they compress the heck out of it then what is the point of 1080p?

You just have more blurry pixels.

I'm telling you, these companies do not

have any real strategies beyond, "let's add some extra hardware and impress the geeks" strategy. All they're going to do is have lopsided products because they don't have a clue what consumers want. Their heads are totally wrapped up into hardware specs. I'm not precisely sure what anyone needs 1080p for on a device that size but I guess it would be useful if it's hooked up to a HDTV. Won't it take a lot of chip horsepower to do that sort of compression? That in turn will tax the battery. Output of 5.1 seems like it could be useful if you've got it hooked up to an HDTV or 5.1 amp. Do they have 5.1 headphones for mobile users?

Apple is going to rule with digital content and that's what consumers are going to want.
