Toshiba shows largest 2.5-inch automotive HDD

Toshiba on Thursday introduced a 200GB and a 100GB single-platter hard drive for navigation data and media storage in cars. The MK2060GSC and MK1060GSC have the same 4,200RPM spin speed and a SATA interface, with the 200GB version offering the highest capacity for automotive 2.5-inch hard drives. The devices have an average seek time of 12ms, and are relatively silent at 23dB.

The rugged drives can operate in temperature of between -30 and 85 degrees Celsius, or -40 to 95 when off, and altitudes ranging from 300 meters below sea level to 5,650 meters. They can also withstand up to 2,940m/s of shock, while vibration resistance is rated at 50-200Hz. The drives will be sold to OEM vehicle and navigation/multimedia device manufacturers.

Both drives begin shipping in August, though pricing information is relegated to OEMs, as the drives are sold in bulk.
