iPhone HD possibly photographed for real

(Update 3: may not be fake after all) The iPhone HD may have been seen in complete form today through a discovery in San Jose. Lost by its owner and hidden in an iPhone 3G case, the device would be a radical redesign that should include the front video camera that justifies the taller build. It would also have 80GB of maximum storage rather than the more likely 64GB, according to Engadget, and was running a newer version of iPhone OS (likely 4.0) before it stopped booting.

Cosmetically, the phone would be the first major re-imagining since the iPhone 3G and would have aluminum sides, not unlike the iPad, but with buttons for volume in place of the rocker switch. It appears to have a flatter back that's still made of plastic to maintain the necessary cellular reception. The model appears to be a prototype as it uses "X" as a placeholder for both the capacity and identifiers like the FCC ID.

Assuming the device is real, it remains possible that the iPhone shown won't be directly reflective of the final model as Apple is known to make design changes even very late into development. However, Apple usually needs to start mass production of iPhones in spring ahead of an early summer launch and thus may have had to produce a small batch for testing.

Update: A Twitter poster uploaded a mosaic of photos of the exact same device that were originally posted by a Chinese user on February 20th. The shots are consistent with the more recent leak and Apple's design; they also show more details, such as the inside of the phone and a clearer view of the front camera.

Update 2: An overnight follow-up suggests it's actually a Japanese imitation phone, although this doesn't entirely explain the information etched on the back of the device.

Update 3: The images may not necessarily be fake. A second post notes that a device roughly matching the looks of the leaked device may actually have been sitting in one of the same photos shown in the accurate iPad photo reveal just a day before the tablet became public. An Engadget tipster with knowledge has also purportedly confirmed that the phone seen earlier is the next iPhone and that it will have both a higher-resolution screen, a sharper back camera with flash, a front camera and the same sort of micro SIM card slot as the 3G-capable iPad. A new forum update has also posted photos of the phone's interior that appear to be consistent. Both the identifying iPad leak photo and the new internal shots are included below.

    Looks like...

Looks like a BlackBerry Bold 9000. I'm calling fake simply based on the fact that Apple a while ago filed for some sort of patent or something for the silver ring around the screen because it actually holds the thing together. And the funky circular buttons while they may look good, don't really fit Apple's MO either.

    Bring it on...

Yep....I'm ready and waiting baby! 80 GB? OH YEAH! I can't wait! Not sure I like the thicker look though. And bringing myself back down to earth, I kind of have my doubts about the 80 GB of storage. Still...I can work with 64 GB and anything more would be great! I wonder what kind of case it was hidden in though? It would have to be some type of silicone case I would imagine. or perhaps a hip case. I also would expect the owner to get a thorough tongue lashing from Steve Jobs over the loss of this prototype (assuming of course this story is true).

Someone went through the trouble to photograph it and didn't take pics of it turned on? No pics of it in multitask mode? No pics of folders? Nothing from the new OS???? Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

no way. steve jobs HATE seams

this looks way too messy for steve jobs. u can look at the macbooks, ipad.. why would they go through so much trouble to produce unibody technology only to produce a messier version of the iphone with horizontal seams? even if this is real, it makes no sense.

    why oh why ...

is it so hard to show properly focussed and properly lighted photos?

These pics look as is they are trying hard to hide something (like a fake iPhone, ya think?).

It probably stopped booting because of a remote kill switch from apple HQ.. Imagine if it is real and they didn't wipe it, we'd have a bunch of screen caps and that apple employee would be even more screwed than he is right now.

Perhaps it's just a prototype but still the owner will have a big problem with his Boss for losing a secret unit. By the way on others news website there is many more pictures. Also prototypes are always bigger and bulkier just because this case can be easily opened and after you can change components inside without having to remake a case.

Any redesign would mimic the MBP/iPad/MBA design language and this does not. Buttons are wrong, unless this is a pre-iPad design freeze prototype or design camo.

    Working Prototype

I think that (if not fake) that it is just a working prototype,
I feel that by release day Apple will go uni-body or continue with the sliver ring and beveled/rounded plastic back to make overall feel to be thinner. Rounded/beveled edges are a better way to go for impacts, a fall on a hard edge as on the above will be prone to more damage than on a rounded/beveled edge. There is no way Apple would go backwards on the industrial design, and those side volume buttons (that in the iPhone finals have as one joined button) are filthy!!
