Flash 10 mobile still on track for spring

Adobe today denied making implications that it was delaying Flash 10.1 for mobile to the second half of the year. A company representative said that CEO Shantanu Narayen's remarks were taken out of context and that it should be ready for Android, BlackBerry and webOS before the end of June. It was instead implied that a download would come as scheduled and that only phones already preloaded with Flash would arrive in the second half of 2010.

The software has maintained the scheduling since unveiled late last year and mostly faces technical challenges, such as minimizing the processor load and preserving battery life. Apple has been one of the few holdouts for mobile Flash partly because of these reasons, but also because it has been crash-prone in Mac OS X and would probably see the same results on the iPhone.

Adobe is under pressure to speed up Flash 10.1 development as an increasing number of major sites, including CNN and YouTube, now play video in Flash-free HTML5 on at least the iPad and likely iPhone 4.0 devices.
