Intel ramps up two faster budget chips

Intel on Tuesday launched two new, fasterdesktop processors without fanfare. The 32 nanometer Core i5-680 clocks in at a regular 3.6GHz across its two cores and can scale up to 3.86GHz with Turbo Boost. It still recognizes Hyperthreading, carries 4MB of Level 3 cache, and clocks its integrated graphics core at 733MHz.

The second chip, the dual-core Pentium E5500, runs at 2.8GHz on the older 45nm process with 2MB of cache and, like other modern Pentiums, doesn't include Hyperthreading or Turbo Boost.

Prices for the processors start at $75 in bulk-level volumes for the 2.8GHz Pentium and $294 for the 3.6GHz Core i5. Either should be available at retail for a higher price and should find their ways into pre-built computers in the near future.

I used to have a PC XT "Turbo".
It had a button on the front that toggled from slower, to faster. heehee!

    Turbo switch

Yeah, that was useful when you wanted to run badly-written games, you could slow it down.
