Device most popular in California, New York
Over 1 million iPads have already been sold, claims online advertiser Chitika. The firm cites tracking figures, which include the number of unique devices that have made contact. Distribution is said to be highest in Apple's home state of California, which represents 19.12 percent of all iPads. Share falls off rapidly elsewhere, with New York claiming the second-highest ownership at 8.3 percent. At the bottom of the top 10 states is Massachusetts with 3.05 percent.
The fewest iPads can be found in Wyoming, representing only 0.03 percent of the market. Apple has itself remained relatively quiet on sales figures, mentioning numbers only in relation to other events. Most recently it announced a quote of 500,000, but only as it apologized for delaying international models until late May.
At one point Chitika mistakenly claimed that 500,000 iPads had been sold just days after launch. The company has since switched to a different counting method, thought to be more accurate. Given Apple's tendency to downplay iPad figures, confirmation of the 1 million mark may take some time.
