Spotify update brings Facebook, local MP3 support
Online music service Spotify has issued its biggest update to date, using Facebook Connect to integrate friends that are also Spotify users. These friends will become visible in the Spotify browser, and activities can be published to Facebook profiles and within Spotify at the same time. This can include playlists users create, profiles, weekly top six tracks and artists, and subscription activity.
Connected users can subscribe to playlists of others with one click from either Spotify or Facebook, and the names and number of friends who subscribed to a particular playlist is published in a submenu. Users can also star and group tracks or albums into a favorites folder. A recommendation folder in each user's profile can also be used to share favorite tracks by dragging them in there.
There is also a new library feature that lets users import local MP3 songs into the Spotify library, including from existing iTunes libraries. Friends subscribing to these local files won't be able to listen to them right away, but Spotify will find and stream their tracks online, if available.
The update is rolling out gradually, with all Spotify users expected to receive it within the next 10 days.
