Acer plans full line of MIDs next month

Acer said as part of its financial results today that it would launch a whole line of mobile Internet devices (MIDs) in May. CEO Gianfranco Lanci was short on details but said they would all have 3G cellular access and would run Acer's custom Shell 4.0 interface. They should also interact with each other, although how wasn't mentioned by Lanci.

Acer is relatively new to the handheld space and only began in earnest when it released multiple Windows Mobile phones last year. It has gained in popularity by shipping its Android-based Liquid series smartphones but hasn't branched outside of the size class until now.

MIDs would arrive from Acer right as Apple is shipping 3G-capable iPads and shortly before one of Acer's largest competitors, Dell, releases its Mini 5 tablet in June. It will run Android and is targeted more at the MID arena with a 5-inch screen, Android and extras like 3G and cameras.
