LG seen supplying next iPhone's 5-megapixel camera

LG already producing new iPhone cameras

LG Innotek is responsible for making the next iPhone's camera, a Korean newspaper claimed today. The electronics maker's plant in Gumi has reportedly started making the 5-megapixel cameras this month and will ramp up production to full speed by the second half of the year. The Chosun Ilbo didn't detail more about the camera but characterized it as "sophisticated."

Prior leaks had the new iPhone using an OmniVision sensor, which may still be true; OmniVision may be supplying the core part but leaving LG to make the complete camera, which includes its lens and the now confirmed flash.

Apple's camera upgrade will put it on par or above a number of its most important competitors, such as the 5-megapixel Droid and Nexus One and above the 3.2-megapixel BlackBerry line. It will trail behind the 8-megapixel Droid Incredible and the 12-megapixel Nokia N8, but Apple since the iPhone 3GS has tried to claim image quality over sheer size. The OmniVision sensor if used would provide low noise and better sensitivity than with most phone cameras. [via AppleInsider]
