Google gets 3D desktop environment

Google today said it had acquired BumpTop. The deal gives Google access to the 3D desktop environment created originally for Macs and Windows PCs. As a result of the move, BumpTop said it will stop selling the Pro version of the app immediately and take down the free version after a week.

None of the involved companies has outlined the stated goals in buying the smaller company, but the plan is likely to affect Android, Chrome OS, or both. Google already has small 3D elements in Android 2.1, such as the photo gallery, but now appears to be more interested in spreading these elements elsewhere. BumpTop isn't designed for the touch environment of Android but lets users arrange app icons and windows in a virtual space while putting notes, photos and other content directly in view, including on the walls.

I'd heard it kinda sucked on OSX so

I doubt if it will be much of a loss for the Mac community. It seemed like a rather novel idea but I never had any use for it.

I'm sure if Apple had bought BumpTop and quickly pulled it, there would have been a major uproar about it claiming that Apple was using it's monopolistic ways to corner innovation or some sort of c***.

I used it for a day

BumpTop didn't exactly suck on OS X, it just didn't add much to what we already have in terms of file navigation and management.

On Windows, yeah, I can see that it would be a huge improvement over Windows Explorer and the million shortcuts on your Desktop. On the Mac, the Finder is getting better all the time, but no matter what problems you may have with it, Finder Column View+Spaces+Expose is pretty fast, easy and powerful file/window management. No, it's not 3D, but 3D is over-hyped these days. (As a side note, 3D movies will not save Hollywood, TV manufacturers should make better and more affordable HDTVs before moving on to 3DTV, and 3D GUIs are never going to appeal to beyond a niche market.)

    Tablets

The concept seems to work better on touchscreen tablets, macrumors has a nice video that shows it of. To complicated but sure has some elements that can be used on a GoogTablet, its also a brain buy.
