Xperia X10 getting new Android, HD video in Q4
Sony Ericsson today confirmed that it would give the Xperia X10 a major upgrade in the fall. As part of a refresh of the custom UXP interface layer, the phone will get both an upgrade to Android 2.1 but also new features. It should now get the same 720p video recording as the Vivaz as well as DLNA media sharing support over the local network.
The X10 mini and X10 mini pro will get the updates at about the same time, the company said. A smaller update is due sooner that will improve the performance of the full-size X10.
A decision to ship the Xperia X10 with Android 1.6 and no immediate path to 2.1 has frustrated some smartphone owners as it rules out certain apps and features, such as the more advanced web browser. Android phones with custom interfaces have regularly suffered this problem as the extra software forces phone makers like HTC and Motorola to spend extra time updating or testing their code before they can apply an upgrade from Google.
