Kobo e-reader due June 17 with Borders apps

Borders on Friday started taking pre-orders for its version of the Kobo eReader. The American version of the reader will go on sale June 17th and, like the Canadian version, will have 100 public domain books already loaded. Price will still be its key selling point as the reader should cost $150.

Physical stores will also get a special digital subsection nicknamed Area-e that will sell both Kobo's reader and other devices starting from August.

In sync with the reader, Borders plans to open its long in development e-book store and, besides serving Kobo's hardware, expects to have apps for the iPad and iPhone as well as Android and BlackBerry devices.

With the Kindle, Nook, iPad and a slew of windows-based tablets on the way, to say nothing of all the Android-based ones...this is news... why?
