WePad tablet preemptively renamed to WeTab
The people behind the WePad tablet have announced on Facebook that they have changed the name of the device to WeTab. This is likely to avoid any potential legal battles with Apple, maker of the iPad, to which the WePad has been compared. No other changes are being made to the device itself, which will continue to sport an Intel Atom CPU along with an 11.6-inch display.
No mention has been made of Apple directly influencing the decision, suggesting the move is more preemptive than a reaction to any legal action.
The tablet aims to improve on the inspiration for its original name with support for Flash web content, an SD card reader and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. Battery life is estimated at about six hours due to the Atom, chip, however.
Two models will be offered, with the base version sporting Wi-Fi and 16GB of integrated memory, along with an equivalent $610 price tag. There will also be a larger, 32GB version at $770 with a 3G radio, GPS and 1080p external video playback capability. Both are shipping in the company's home market of Germany at an unknown point in time; the prospects for a North American release aren't known.
