LCD offers 1,100 nit brightness for daylight use

Panasonic has introduced its latest rugged notebook, the Toughbook 31. Like other devices in the series, the new notebook features MIL-STD-810G certification for protection from six-foot drops, shock, vibration, dust, rain, sand, altitude, and extreme temperature variations. The magnesium alloy case is fully sealed to protect against water, while the hard drives are shock mounted and still claimed to be easily removable.

The new Toughbook is offered in Core i5- and Core i3-based configurations, with the basic Core i3 2.26GHz CPU paired with a 160GB hard drive and integrated Intel HM55 graphics. Customers can stem up to the 2.40GHz Core i5 CPU with a QM57 controller, or choose the 2.53GHz Core i5 option which also adds ATI Radeon HD5650 discrete graphics.

A 13.1-inch XGA LCD features the company's CircuLumin technology with 1,100 nits brightness for use in direct sunlight, adjustable all the way down to 2 nits for concealed nighttime use in military and law-enforcement applications. Despite the bright screen and Core i5 CPU, Panasonic still claims the battery life will extend up to 10 hours and recharge 47 percent faster than its predecessor.

Each device integrates Wi-Fi and Bluetooth components, with optional WiMAX and Gobi2000 mobile broadband modems. Other optional features include a webcam, GPS receiver, blacklit keyboard, SmartCard reader, fingerprint scanner, and locking systems for the HDD and battery.

The Toughbook 31 is expected to be available globally beginning May 12, with prices starting at $3,800.
