Skype says three-plus video chat a premium feature

Continuing its string of VoIP updates today, Skype has launched a new beta with its promised group video calling feature. The Windows test version allows as many as five users at once and lets users add new users or share screens on the spot. Both a modern computer and a fast Internet connection are needed for every user.

Skype said the feature was free during the beta but would be a "premium" service in the future, although two-way chat and voice only service would remain free. A Mac version of the feature is in development and should be available sometime later in the year.

    Let me get this straight...

What exactly is Skype offering me with multi-way video chat that I should be paying for? In the case of calls to phones I understand why I have to pay for the connection, but what is it about multi-way video that is different from one-to-one video -- is Skype hosting it for me? Someone prioritising the traffic? Doing anything at *all* other than setting up the connection?

I wonder if anyone has told Skype that businesses don't especially need them and that consumers don't especially need to pay for multi-way video? I wish iChat were more reliably passed through firewalls and could do video with non-Macs, then I'd be set.

And who are all these businesses using?

Well, gee, you're right. If only some company would create a free set of programs that would deal with all your video-chat needs, then you would be set.

Um, maybe that's why you should be paying for Skype, so you can deal with non-Macs and get through firewalls easier. Or I guess you think you should get everything for free...

iChat can do this already (even Mac to PC)

iChat can do multi-way video chat already Mac-to-Mac and Mac-to-PC. If you have a PC with AOL instant messenger and a video camera then you're set to chat with a Mac user with iChat. Boom. Done.

    Meh

I have a paid skypein # and replaced Vonage with them for $60/yr instead of $25/mo. So far the service IMO is meh.

I do wish the iChat video thing was an open standard so that other services and packages could interoperate with it, but oh well.

    AOL Instant Messenger is free

To get iChat to work with a PC just download AOL instant messenger to the PC. The software and the screen mame are free. The AOL feature is built in to iChat - all you need there is to enter the free screen name you got on the AOL site. 'Been that way for many years.
