T-Mobile to bring Wi-Fi calling to Android phones

T-Mobile will start testing UMA calling on Android devices starting this summer, BGR reported on Thursday. The first-of-its-kind functionality for Android devices will use T-Mobile's HotSpot@Home service to hand off calls to Wi-Fi/VoIP networks to save on airtime minutes and, where it's needed, increase reception.

The Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) service will automatically bridge calls without any interruptions, though it does require a separate subscription. The service adds $10 per month to an existing individual calling plan or $20 for a family plan, but a required router is free after a rebate. Subscribers can also connect for free at T-Mobile's public Wi-Fi hotspots.
