Acer says no Chrome OS in short term

Acer this afternoon shot down rumors that it would show Chrome OS devices at next month's Computex show. The company said it had "no short-term plans" to launch a netbook using Google's desktop OS. It maintained that Chrome OS was an "exciting product" but wasn't ready to commit to any plans.

The PC builder is believed to be one of the key supporters of Chrome OS, but Google has only gone on record as saying finished hardware would be ready in the second half of the year. Chrome OS has needed both the typical development process but also has its own stringent hardware requirements to run properly, such as the use of solid-state drives.

In the future, the OS will be targeted not just at netbooks but also tablets and some desktops.
