Mass production expected to begin in June

OmniVision has unveiled its latest electronic component, the OV2720 image sensor with support for 1080p video. The compact design is claimed to be the first 1/6-inch, native 1080p/30fps CMOS sensor capable of fitting into the thin housings of netbook lids, netbooks, or other video conferencing devices.

The sensor is said to support binning for a significant increase in low-light performance over its VGA counterparts. The component also supports a variety of platform architectures and different controllers for flexibility across a range of potential devices.

Recent reports suggest the upcoming iPhone will utilize an OmniVision-designed camera sensor, although it is likely a different component than the OV2720. Speculation points to the 1080p-capable OV5650 as a possibility, however it is unclear if the company will take advantage of the HD recording feature.

OmniVision is currently sampling the OV2720, with mass production expected to begin sometime in June.
