Kindle for Android doesn't need web viewer
Amazon today gave a preview of Kindle for Android, its long-in-waiting e-reader app. The new version has the familiar interface but stands out for its inclusion of a Kindle store browser within the app itself; unlike the iPhone or iPad versions, it doesn't require a web browser. The App Store's requirement for royalty cuts through in-app purchases has led Amazon to use Safari for purchasing on Apple's devices.
The Android edition still supports syncing books and bookmarks between the Kindle hardware and other devices. At present, however, it doesn't support newspapers or other subscription material, putting it at a disadvantage in that area compared to versions for the iPad and similar devices.
Amazon plans to post the Kindle app to Android Market sometime this summer and is taking notification sign-ups today. When it appears, it will need at least Android 1.6 as well as a microSD card slot to store the books themselves.
