Twitter for iPhone about to go live

A phantom entry in the App Store (link) has revealed that the official Twitter app for iPhone is on the verge of going live. While the entry still claims that the app isn't available in the US or any other store, it does reveal that the app may largely be a rebadge of the recently acquired Tweetie. It so far shows as version 3.0 and even uses the Tweetie 2 icon, although the latter is likely to change.

The appearance comes just hours after Tweetie 2 vanished and could make for a very different client than Twitter for Android, which has a mostly unique UI and was even given OS-specific features through help from Google. Tweetie 2 was well-known for taking advantage of the iPhone SDK but mostly conforms to its existing interface concepts.

When fully ready, Twitter for iPhone should be a free download versus the $3 for the earlier app.
