LaCie ships Network Space MAX network storage drive

updated 03:00 pm EDT, Wed May 19, 2010

Comes in 2TB, 4TB capacities

Storage maker LaCie has launched the Network Space MAX, a new network-attached storage drive. The peripheral connects to a computer or LAN through a Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing multiple devices to share its data; it can alternately be connected via USB. The latter also permits users to share a printer, or upload files directly from a camera.

The MAX comes in 2 and 4TB capacities, in each case using twin hard disks. Both drive models can be set to a RAID 0 configuration for maximum storage, or RAID 1 to mirror files if a disk fails. The MAX can also be configured for Time Machine backup, as an iTunes server, or else a UPnP- or DLNA-based media server for Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s.

Like some other NAS drives, LaCie's offering can be set to download files while a computer is off. The 2TB MAX is being sold for $280, while 4TB costs $480. Both editions are presently listed as out of stock online, though they should be available through retail.
