Boxes to support stereoscopic RealD format

PopBox has announced a new partnership with RealD that will bring 3D support to the PopBox set-top boxes. RealD technology presents the left and right streams as a single channel, requiring special glasses to achieve the 3D effect. The company's technology is widely used at the cinema level, featured in blockbuster films such as Avatar.

Several TV makers have announced similar partnerships with RealD to support the latter company's 3D technology. Samsung, JVC, and Panasonic have committed to using RealD technology in a variety of 3D-enabled TVs.

The PopBox platform will be 3D-ready at launch time, with the set-top boxes available "soon." The company offers a standard model for $130, while the wireless variant carries a $150 price tag.
