Samsung Wave launches first in Europe

Singapore, China, Brazil next in line


Samsung today began shipping the Wave S8500 in several European countries, including Germany, France and the UK. The company expects to begin shipping the Wave to Singapore, China, and Brazil in the coming months. The Wave is the first smartphone based on Samsung’s open platform, Bada.

Samsung is positioning bada as a "more democratic" alternative to the iPhone and Android-based phones. The company has created a Samsung App store to compete with the iPhone has been launched in the UK, France, Italy, Singapore, Germany, Brazil and China, but so far content is limited to Windows Mobile or Symbian based phones. Samsung is sponsoring a developer challenge with a top prize of $300,000 to spur interest in developing applications for its new platform.
