Dell's 5-inch Android tablet ready in UK

Dell today finally pledged itself to a launch for the Streak. The 5-inch Android device (sometimes known as the Mini 5) should now reach the UK first and will ship as a carrier-backed device first: it will be available initially through O2 and Carphone Warehouse to use its built-in 3G. Dell UK will carry it later that same month; the US is downplayed in the launch and won't get the device until later this summer.

All countries get the same design, which has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and a multi-touch, 800x480 display that Dell believes is large enough to show many sites at full size. It runs a custom version of Google's mobile OS optimized for the larger screen size and supports modern Android features like voice commands and Google Maps Navigation. Only 2GB of storage is built-in, but Dell hopes to compete on sheer features with a microSDHC card slot, a 5-megapixel rear camera with flash, and a front VGA (0.3-megapixel) camera for video chats or live streaming.

The Streak is Dell's first entry into the tablet space and is due to be part of a larger family that the company hopes to use against both the iPad and iPod touch. A 7-inch tablet so far nicknamed the Looking Glass is due in the fall and could be accompanied by a 10-inch model early next year.

    Dell's SkidMark

I'm surprised Dell didn't add a bunch of extra buttons and lights. It looks uncharacteristically subdued.

That interface looks pretty awful. Tiny square application windows floating in the middle of the screen? Large app icons off to the side? Yucko!

I suppose if the display rotates between landscape and portrait, there's no need to scale or alter the app window size/scale.

It seems like lazy programming to me, but given the Android platform's plethora of screen sizes, hardware specs and designs, that kind of usability compromise is probably necessary if it's to works on so many different types devices.

    Apps on the side

Those apps are actually widgets; I've seen the Streak in person at CES, you still get full-screen apps when they're called for.

It's also thinner than you think, although with a 5-inch screen it's not exactly what I'd shove in my pants pocket.

    Thinner than you think...

Roehlstation: Actually, the Dell Streak is 10mm thick. It's thinner than the iPhone 3Gs. Maybe the photo doesn't do it justice.

    Thanks,

    Dell Streak hybrid

I guess, many oiut there can't wait to get one. Obviously Dell Streak is much smaller than a table, it is multifunctional, using a web cam in front also. Dell is going to be issuing this phone first in Europe and then partnering with AT&T to release the phone in America. Once this phone is unveiled we'll know more about how well it does. Dell has gotten a bad track record of cutting quality with their costs.
