PS3 nearly a third of all consoles through Q1

Sony has a 31 percent global market share for gaming consoles in the first quarter with its PlayStation 3, Strategy Analytics found today. The report predicts that there will be 14 million PS3s sold in 2010, while Nintendo will move 17.5 million Wiis and Microsoft will shift 10.5 million Xbox 360s. According to the Principal Analyst at Strategy Analytics, David Mercer, the PS3's success is due to its price cut in September and should help it maintain growth throughout the rest of the year.

The report stresses that the first quarter of the year is typically the weakest when it comes to gaming console sales. The Xbox 360 should see a sales boost when Project Natal comes out in the second half of the year.

Finally, Strategy Analytics foresees total home gaming console sales falling by 9 percent compared to 2009. The age of the existing platforms may be a factor.
