Rock Band 3 controller to be a keytar?

updated 05:20 pm EDT, Wed May 26, 2010

Rock Band 3 keytar would come separately

The fifth Rock Band 3 instrument is a keytar, a historically reliable tipster mentioned this afternoon. The peripheral would permit piano and synth music but would still have the familiar guitar feel. It wouldn't, however, ship in any bundle with the game and would only be an option, much like most of the non-guitar instruments.

The game would represent a break for EA and Harmonix in hardware distribution, the Ars Technica contact said. EA would only distribute the software itself while Mad Catz, best known for making third-party controllers of all types, would simply ship official Rock Band controllers at the same time. A possible "pro mode" in the music game would require more authentic music technique and could lead to realistic instruments.

Full details are thought to be showing during E3 in mid-June and would ship in the fall. [image via Village Voice]
