Nokia and Opera side with Adobe in Flash debate

Both companies plan to support the technology

Nokia and Opera have both committed to backing Adobe amid Apple's bashing of Flash technology, according to a Reuters report. Opera co-founder Jon von Tetzchner, speaking at the Open Mobile Summit in London, acknowledged that his company will support Flash with its own mobile browsers.

"It is the only proprietary part of the Web we support," said von Tetzchner.

Nokia's solutions business head Alberto Torres echoed von Tetzchner's remarks, proclaiming "We support Flash as well."

Although Apple has maintained staunch opposition to Flash on the iPhone and iPad, many of the company's competitors are eyeing the technology to give their own devices an edge. Adobe recently launched a Flash 10.1 beta for Android 2.2 devices, as Flash technology was an integral element of Google's recent I/O developers conference.

Many analysts believe that Apple's position may be pushing web developers away from Flash, however many companies plan to launch separate websites -- one tailored for Apple's gadgets and the other designed to take advantage of Flash capabilities. Adobe suggests that the number of developers dropping Flash has not made an impact on the technology's continued growth.

    Supporting Adobe....

Well........"Adobe recently launched a Flash 10.1 beta for Android 2.2 devices, as Flash technology was an integral element of Google's recent I/O developers conference."

Where it crashed several times in a major fashion. Flash will work... .... on the top of the line processors... on the top and newest phones.. ONLY. Eventually.

So, we are supporting FLASH for what reason now... ??? Look, flash on a laptop works.. sort of. so its ok there.

But on mobile devices??? FLASH will never run except on the latest and newest phones. Maybe. So right away we are looking at a very limited number of phones, now and going forward. No iPad. No iPhone. No iPod touch.

Just a thought here folks. Just a thought.

    Gosh, I'm so surprised...

... by this turn of events. Who'd have though that one of the many cell phone makers that Apple left behind in the dust is taking sides against Apple? Golly.

    The only flash

worth seeing is at Mardi Gras. This is a dying "proprietary" technology. Uh, Adobe, maybe learn from Shockwave and Director. What would be awesome is if they saw the light and turned "Flash" into a visual HTML5 development tool.

These companies that would rather keep

supporting Flash honestly don't have that much to gain except in the very short term and that's providing Adobe can actually come up with a decent mobile Flash solution. There are so many Android smartphones that will not be able to be upgraded to the latest Android OS and many that won't have the processor requirements to run Flash so I doubt if they'll have that much of an edge over Apple with Flash support. Aside from the tech fanboys fight, I'm more concerned about the everyday consumer who might have problems with a subpar Flash plug-in. It's really up to Adobe to get things right. That Flash plug-in is going to have to work properly on so many vendors devices and I'd think that would be a major problem. They keep using the Nexus One as the demo device. I wish they'd use some other Android models.
