Sanyo shows underwater Xacti HD camera

Sanyo on Friday announced a new addition to its Xacti digital cameras with the DMX-CA100. The new vertical design is waterproof at depths of 10 feet for up to one ahour and can record 1080p video in the computer-friendly H.264 format. It can capture 14-megapixel still photos, and there is a 6X optical zoom along with a 6x Advanced Zoom that crops the image sensor. There is also a High-Speed Sequential Shooting mode that can capture 22 photos at 7FPS.

Two sets of controls, each dedicated to either capturing photos or recording videos, means users don’t have to flip a toggle to do either. There is no internal memory, with storage coming in the form of SDXC memory cards. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the device will be out at the end of June. Available colors include black, yellow and pink.

    Great for monitoring oil geysers

Seriously though, these guys continue to evolve this design, and now for a period of up to one hour underwater, that's pretty good.

I have looked at these cameras many times in the past and have always wondered how functional that overall design is, for those that have one of the previous models, do you like it? Would you buy it again?

    They're good in good light

I have a friend with one and he is pretty happy with it. The main issue with the Xacti (and most other camcorders in this price class) is low light performance. They take pretty reasonable video out of doors, but if you plan to use it indoors you will have to be ok with a lot of noise in your video or plan on using good lights.

    Main issue

Bigger problem isn't low light anymore (previous models were just awful; last year's ones are quite decent and competitive). The main issue, though, is image stabilisation. It is just plain useless, and for any kind of handheld shooting, the result is rather difficult to watch.

It will be interesting to find out how much these are going to cost. Kodak came out this winter with an underwater Flip-Mino style device (Zx3) for $150. And it shoots rather decent HD.
