Old Microsoft browser dying off amid rivals

Internet Explorer 6 has finally dropped to less than 5 percent share in the US, new data from StatCounter shows. The browser from 2001 has sunk to just over 4.7 percent in May. It accompanies an even faster decline from IE7, which dropped most of a point to 16.6 percent; only IE8 gained share among Microsoft's browsers, crossing the 30 percent mark for the first time to reach 30.5 percent of use.

The IE platform as a whole dropped very slightly in the last month to reach 51.9 percent and was mostly affected by Chrome. Google's browser grew from 7.7 percent of the field in April to nearly 8.1 percent last month. Other alternative browsers stayed flat or declined, as Firefox fell to 29.3 percent and Safari was virtually steady at 9.1 percent.

Similar patterns played out worldwide, but IE6 share is still a factor for some web developers as developing countries were still likely to have many more older computers or to have skipped on browser upgrades. IE8 only just overtook IE6 in Asia, where the older app still has 20.8 percent of the market. Africa is witnessing the effect as well, as IE6 and IE8 are only just now on the verge of trading places.

The 9-year-old browser has increasingly been seen as a liability for the web as its relatively inaccurate browsing has often forced web developers to limit features or spend extra time checking compatibility. Security has also been an issue, as later Internet Explorer versions have had both fewer exploits and more features to help guard against phishing or other common browser security breaches.

    No PNG Fix

Yay, I can shut down all my scripts for support of transparent .PNG's

...otherwise why is this story headlined with IE6? It's old and two versions behind!

    With luck

by the end of the summer we'll have the last of IE6 scrubbed from our systems. We have a couple of old ones that are going to be tricky but the majority were updated to IE8 a couple of months ago. We just skipped IE7. It was the Vista of browsers: all the limitations and problems of 6 but an interface that a 5 year old could have done better.

HOWEVER: IE was updated because we can't uninstall it completely and we wanted to close security holes. We use Firefox 3.6 and only let the users see shortcuts to Firefox. IE is as hidden as we can make it.

    Corporate Drone

Spare a thought for those with employers whose 8 figure priced CRM software will ONLY work (additional digit upgrade pricetag notwithstanding) on IE6. As we all sail into the sunset on the good ship Firefox, remember that from now on people like ourself will be gradually experiencing a gradual degredation of what we can sneak a look at in office hours. Flash drives banned ( no portable versions) and nobody is meant to use the web anyway for not work applications.
