Signs hint MobileMe may change to free and paid tiers

Apple may free some of MobileMe to fight Google

Plans by Apple to make MobileMe free as a hedge against Google may have been given some clues by Apple itself through quite changes noted by some subscribers. Existing members have noted their accounts at least temporarily changing over from "individual" to "full member" without any changes of their own. The switches coincide with maintenance Apple had scheduled for the same day.

The labeling implies that, rather than offer a completely free service, Apple may stratify its service into basic and full tiers where free customers still get core services while full members get extras. Features that need large amounts of storage, like iDisk and the photo and video galleries, arethe most likely to be cut from free versions if such a strategy exists.

Apple has lately faced growing criticism for continuing to charge for MobileMe at a time when Google can promise free e-mail, calendars and contacts synchronized online for Android phones where the iPhone is still at least partly reliant on a physical sync without paying $99 per year. The company has recently been working on a North Carolina data center that could help scale such plans in the future.

    Full Circle

It's Déjà vu all over again.

My .mac account started a long time ago when it was free.

Whatever it changes to, I will probably keep paying for the "extras"

I don't mind the $99 now for all of the syncing it does to keep my iDisk on four machines.

I do wish I can change my .mac email address. I don't like the one I have. I want to switch it with one on my aliases and then make on of my current aliases the main one.

Plus, my wife has a sub account under my account. I wish the find my iPhone feature would track both of our phones at the same time.

    About time too

I liked an idea that was floating around these forums when the rumors of MobileFree last came up: give Mac customers 3 years of full MobileMe free with a new Mac purchase, and iPhone/iPad purchasers 2 years. If they want to continue using it after that time: $49/year. Or they could just buy a new Mac/iThing and get the whole 2 or 3 years free service again.

That would be marketing genius from my point of view. Whatever Apple does, they need to get away from the ridiculously high $99/year price point. MobileMe would be another great reason to bring people to the Mac (iPhone, etc.) and keep them there, if it only got marketed and priced correctly.

    Makes sense

It makes sense that Apple would do this. In fact it could be argued that it's probably over due given what else is available for free. However, I've really enjoyed the integration between all my devices, iLife, etc. Like DeepDish, I've was OK with $99 a year for this service, and depending on what the difference is between basic and full service, I would likely continue to pay if the basic didn't cover everything I currently doe with MobileMe.

    not sense

This doesn't make a lot of sense when you consider that the parts they would have to give away for free (in order to make it a competitive service), are pretty much the heart of the system and comprise pretty much everything we get now under the paid version.

    is it risky...

...after switching to a mac.com email address when it was free & then being unilaterally ransomed to a paid service...

...yahoo flip-flopped on offline POP email access depending on what google offered which killed that for me...

...adding/offering paid enhancements/value is one thing but a history of bait & switch may make apple risky?

    Long way to go

Unfortunately Apple has a long way to go if they want to catch GOOG in the cloud. Google docs are becoming the standard for collaboration in education, and this will move out to professional world as soon as these people graduate.

I'd just like my mac.com address to be the default one. I've never liked "me.com". I understand how they're positioning it, but I just don't like the name.

Mine now says "individual" I wonder what that means? Perhaps we'll find out on Monday?

    Hmm

I only hope that any free options will protect their users' privacy, and Apple won't be combing through all the user's correspondence and content in order to target ads for their partners' products (or whatever other reason they may have). Google's free services are unacceptable for this reason, and such tactics would tarnish Apple's brand in the increasingly important domain of user privacy, which has been getting a lot of media attention lately.

As for MobileMe's value, I'd like to see the price get cut in half to around $50/yr, at least for the services I use (email, storage, gallery). Find my iPhone and others could be value-added optional services. $100/yr is a bit much given the competition out there.

    to DeepDish

DeepDish, I don't know if this option is new, but if you have a Family account, you can convert an alias into a member account. Go into your accounts settings on me.com and in the Family Pack section, click on Assign. There is an option: "Convert email alias. Use one of your email aliases as a Family Member account"

    Sailin,

Sign out and back into Mobile Me and it will change from "individual" to "Full Member".
