LimeWire to operate for at least two more weeks

At a hearing on Monday, US District Judge Kimba Wood gave LimeWire lawyers two weeks to respond to a motion filed on Friday by RIAA that would close down the music service. RIAA, which represents the music industry, won a copyright infringement lawsuit against LimeWire. A request from a Lime Group lawyer for two more weeks was denied. When LimeWire responds, RIAA gets two weeks for a response, but Judge Wood can rule anytime after the response.

LimeWire executives feel a permanent injunction against the service could hurt the industry, as the company is developing digital music technologies that could benefit the industry.

RIAA is focusing on damages, telling the judge that it believes it has the right to ask LimeWire for the net worth of all defendants, including Gorton. It has accused Gorton in the past of trying to stash money in a family trust in an attempt to keep the music labels from claiming a stake in it.
