Notion Ink hints at non-Tegra, LCD tabletsN

Notion Ink's CEO Rohan Shravan today sent word that the company may have cheaper tablets in store beyond the still-to-come Adam. The company will have at least a version with a single LCD rather than the dual, outdoor-readable Pixel Qi design. The company has also been testing "another platform" beyond NVIDIA's Tegra that would be very power-efficient and significantly less costly to use.

The unspecified new chip isn't certain, but Notion Ink still expects that the Adam will ship sooner than November in some areas. User interface work should largely be done and should lead to a release of the developer kit soon. E-mail has been given a particularly large redesign and may be a selling point for the Adam.

Despite rumors, financial health isn't expected to be an issue, and Notion Ink has just recently received a last round of funding that could lead to relatively high production numbers. Shravan expects that particularly strong sales could lead to 100,000 Adam tablets being made per month. The number would be dwarfed by Apple's roughly one million per month but would be strong for a first product.
