Sony may have shown PS3 price cut for E3 early

Sony may have revealed some of its plans for E3 next week through a promo page for its new wave of 3D-capable home electronics. The PS3 category shows the line starting at $200, or a full $100 less than it does today. Clicking through or visiting other sites still shows the original pricing, but the splash page makes no indication that the price is temporary.

Sony hasn't confirmed or denied the drop.

The price would be a steep drop for Sony but might be feasible through its current strategy. A reduction could help offset the cost of the PlayStation Move, which itself may reach $100. Sony has also noted that the PS3 is much less expensive to make and could now be profitable even before buyers add games.

Slashing the price could be major strike against Microsoft and Nintendo. The Xbox 360 Arcade and Wii already sit at $200, but their stripped-down features wouldn't be as appealing for those who want Blu-ray or a hard drive. [via MaxConsole]
