Microsoft may sell 5 million Project Natals in 2010

MS has high hopes for Natal controller

Microsoft hopes to sell "at least" five million Project Natal controllers this year, two insiders said late Thursday [subscription required]. The sources didn't provide the exact launch date or price but implied to the WSJ that the target was aggressive, as the motion controllers would only ship late in the year. Microsoft has publicly touted Natal as one of its most important launches.

Production is important enough that Foxconn and Flextronics, both of whom are making the Natal hardware, are rumored to start shipments as early as August. Earlier tips have put the Xbox 360 add-on in October. Mass production wouldn't start in earnest until 2011, however.

Project Natal may be crucial to Microsoft's holiday sales, as the company is about to compete head-to-head with PlayStation Move on the PS3. Both are designed as reactions to the Nintendo Wii, which to this day still usually outsells both its Microsoft and Sony rivals.

5 Million and the Year is Half Over

What made the Wii such a hot platform is that Nintendo didn't make it for the hard core gamer. The controller was simply part of that design. Instead of a dozen buttons that didn't map to the movement of the game. (Press the "D" button to pick up a gun, and "B" to reload), the Wii controller made it easy to pick up the game. The price was another issue. While the XBox and the PS3 were originally in the $300 to $500 range, the Wii was less than half the price.

I'm not sure if Project Natal is going to be as big a seller as Microsoft hopes. Can Microsoft sell the XBox with Project Natal for under $200? Will hardcore gamers, the ones who buy all those popular first person shooters and hard core racing and sports games, even want the Project Natal controller. These gamers might simply find it distracting. Instead of sitting a foot away from the console concentrating on the characters and relying on muscle memory, they'll now have to stand up and prance around.

Already, the eco system has been set. Where XBox and PS3 games tend to be violent and action packed, Wii games tend to be family oriented. Where the XBox and PS3 games concentrate on real looking cars, motorcycles, and scantily clad women, Wii racing games are like Mario Kart.

    Or

    ...or they might not...

I love MS's speculation. It does look like a cool piece of hardware if it works as advertised.
