Long-awaited update finally reaches Europe

After a delay of nearly two months, HTC said it will deliver the Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero users in Europe by the end of June. SIM-free Orange and T-Mobile subscribers will receive the new OS in two steps. The company warned that the second stage will wipe all data from the handset and urged users to back up important information.

Customers in the US began receiving the update in late May, but it wasn't until two weeks ago that HTC released a version compatible with GSM phones.

The upgrade gives faster performance and includes a newer web browser, advanced voice command services, access to the updated Android Market and newer services like Google Maps Navigation. Because of the Hero's lower processing power the animated backgrounds feature in Android 2.1 won't be present. [via T3]
