Apple already sold out of launch day iPhone 4s

New iPhone 4 orders now pushed to July 2

Apple through its online store has already confirmed that new iPhone 4 pre-orders won't ship on launch day. Anyone buying the new phone is now told Apple will start shipping their examples by July 2, or more than a week later. Only the 8GB iPhone 3GS still arrives on June 24.

The overnight sellout has followed just hours after AT&T also ran dry. Both still expected to have extra stock on hand for retail buyers who haven't ordered in advance, but the ratio of pre-orders to in-store stock is unlikely to ever be known. Best Buy, Radio Shack and Walmart will have their own supplies.

They arrive in spite of ordering setbacks at Apple and AT&T that led many to either take hours to complete orders or even give up entirely.

Combined, either sellout is a record for the iPhone. Advance orders were possible for the iPhone 3GS last year, but worries of immediate sellouts for pre-orders weren't an issue at the time. The sales rate hints Apple is likely to sell many more iPhones in at least the US than it did a year earlier. European sales were also similarly brisk.

Accordingly, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has issued a research note this morning in which he thinks two million iPhones sold next weekend is an "achievable" feat. He now believes Apple may sell as many as 9.5 million iPhones worldwide for the spring quarter, up from 8.5 million. The tally would put Apple within a million of RIM's latest BlackBerry sales and should increase in the summer as other countries get access to the iPhone 4.

    Yes but the Google phone...

Okay pundits and Apple haters, now its time to spin this into a failure for the iPhone while telling us Android is: better, cheaper and will be the most dominant smart phone someday.

Yes, here come the iHaters ...

to put a negative spin on what is obviously a hugely successful launch of yet another great Apple product.

    Cue testudo, ilovestevejobs, et. al.

B.. but.. Android outsold iPhone a month ago, didn

I'd just love to see what the next round of sales comparisons will show. Android will barely be a blip on the radar.

    no, no, no

When actual numbers show the success of an Apple product the "iHaters" start with the personal attacks. Obviously the tremendous numbers of launch day sales only go to prove that we're sheep and will buy any lousy thing that Apple offers us.

Apple gets me. They know exactly what I want and as long as they keep feeding my need, I'll keep buying their product. Yeah, it's kinda like crack, but it's gooooood crack.

    Good products, high demand

Hey, if you make a good product that has features people want, folks will line up to give you their money. Apple's figured out how to make technology attractive and easy to use - and it shows in their sales.

The iPhone is just plain well designed, has good features, and keeps pushing the limits of what you can do with a mobile device. That's something that's attractive to me and, obviously, to many others.

    Good job, Apple.

    sold out...

Just another "We had NO idea that the iPhone 4 would be so popular and so we're going to be sold out of stock on opening day!" announcement from Apple. Of course, notice they don't say how many will be available on launch day. No better way to make demand look strong than to limit availability.

Or is that just all the other phone vendors who do that?

And, wait, no one has posted pro-android stuff here? Wonder why? Because there's nothing about this that in any way is pro or anti Android or Apple. It's freakin' sales numbers.

But it does seem like the Apple crowd is getting more and more defensive of late.

    Regardless....

Regardless of how many units were set aside for pre-order on the 15th, and what people say vs other phones, this phone is one more rung in the ladder to be #1 in mobile handsets worldwide.

    Testudo got one right

    > Or is that just all the other phone vendors who do that?

Yes, you finally got one right.

So, you think that Apple and AT&T rigged their sites to crash from overloading to make the product look better than it is? You think that Apple is purposely slowing down production to avoid having to sell so many phones?

What mental defect do you have that makes you want to post such nonsense?
