Plantronics outs latest headset with Dobly 7.1

Plantronics on Thursday introduced its latest gaming headset, the GameCom 777. It gets virtual 7.1 surround sound from Dolby Headphone and Dolby ProLogic IIx. The noise-cancelling microphone housed in the boom allows for two-way communication, and the boom can be detached.

There are both USB and analog connections, though to get the full Dolby 7.1 experience, a Dolby USB sound card or another form of decoding is required. A remote comes in-line and controls both volume and muting the mic. The headphones' individual speakers are 40mm across and have a frequency response range between 20Hz and 20kHz.

The GameCom 777 works with both Macs and Windows PCs and will ship later in June, though pricing has not been revealed.

    7.1?

So how does a stereo headset give me 8 discrete channels of sound?

    it works

I have a tritton 720, 5.1. 2 speakers in each can, simulated center channel. it works quite well. dead space is creepy as h***, you hear bullets plink next to your head (or whizz past) in MW, and you get a slight edge in multiplayer MW and UC2 - because you can hear people behind you.

    split/second is amazing

it really does change the experience. I've fired up games i finished long ago just to hear the difference

the only drawback to the tritton is it's optical in only.. you may or may not be able to use it on a PC, but if you play primarily on consoles (not counting the Wii - no optical) it doesn't matter.

i orignally got it because i like things loud - which bugs the downstairs neighbor.. but after hearing the difference, I play with the headset most of the time.
