Innpu to release handsets with built-in headsets

Chinese cellphone maker Innpu has introduced what it claims are the first handsets with built-in retractable headphones. The W1860 and T1880 are meant to appease those who fear exposure of cell radiation to the user's head while freeing up their hands. Callers are more likely to use a headset while on the phone if they always have one available, Innpu claims.

The company says the retractable mechanism can wind up to ten thousand times during its lifespan and has been optimized to be as compact as possible. Since it's not wireless, it doesn't need to be constantly charged and is more comfortable as it doesn't need to be worn constantly.

Both handsets run on Windows Mobile 6.5 and support China Unicom's 2G and 3G networks. The touchscreen smartphones have few details but carry 624MHz processors, five-megapixel cameras, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, among other features.

A release for worldwide markets is expected soon, though it and target pricing haven't been revealed.
