Nokia seen making 9-inch tablet with ARM, MeeGo

Nokia may not use Atom for MeeGo tablet

Nokia's rumored tablet had some of its details firmed up today in one analyst note. The device would use MeeGo, the mobile OS designed with Intel, but would use an ARM processor and not the Atom Z600 Intel would prefer. Digitimes Research claimed in the note that it would have either a seven- or nine-inch screen and would be assembled by Foxconn for the fall.

Many of the other details weren't known, but it was likely the tablet would have 3G and could be sold through carriers, presumably with a subsidy to lower the price for customers that sign up for a contract.

The Finnish company has long been expected to make a return to tablets after it dropped the N810 but is now coming in after it has lost its one-time lead to Apple's iPad. It may also have an uphill struggle as MeeGo will have relatively few apps where the iPad already has over 10,000 titles specific to its platform.

    And the price?

So, what is Nokia going to charge for this 9 inch tablet? If it can't be significantly cheaper than the iPad, it'll do about as well as the JooJoo tablet.

    Nice

This will be a full-fledged Linux distribution with a touch-driven interface. You can install any Linux software on there, and hopefully we'll see some development activity going on for the platform. Nokia even lets their users wipe the OS and install their own if they want. It's basically like a PC that you own and control, and do what you want with, even better than Android devices, which the owner doesn't have root access to by default. I'm all for Nokia empowering their customers, and I hope they are rewarded for it. Given their track record these last few years, however, I can't be too optimistic about its chances competing against Apple and the iPad. We'll see. It's always nice to have some serious competition.

Sorry, but you can't start shouting "FUD" and "Vaporware" on a RUMOR! Because all this is is some analyst talking about what he's thinking. Nokia hasn't said word one.

Oh, and you need to learn something else.

FUD is an acronym standing for "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt". It is used to define announcements made by a dominant company to try to kill competing products even though said product is nowhere near ready to ship.

A good example of such a thing is MS announcing Windows NT 4.0 and all it's great features in an effort to thwart companies from migrating to the latest version of Novell Netware.

Now, can you explain to us how Nokia, who has no presence in the tablet world, and has been pushed to the margins in the mobile phone market over the last couple of years, can spread "FUD" in the tablet market? Who exactly are they trying to convince, let alone what are they trying to kill? The iPad? Really?

You'd have better luck trying to get people to believe that MS could spread some Zune FUD to kill iPod sales.

The only company in the tablet market that can spread FUD is, in fact, Apple. So, if you see Apple making some grand announcement later this year about what iPad 5.0 is going to do (esp. if it occurs right after some magical android tablet announcement or something), then you can claim FUD.

In fact, it could be argued that Apple's Push Notifications announcement with the iPhone OS 2.0 announcement was FUD, since it was designed to give people the idea that sort of multi-tasking was coming, so keep buying the iPhone! And it never showed up in the 2.0 software, but was a year late when it came in 3.0.
