Vonage plans iPad app, video calling, more

VoIP provider Vonage will rely on digital tablet devices such as Apple's iPad to help it get back into profitability, according to company CEO Marc Lefar. The company has an app planned for the tablet and has the ability to video and messaging to its service. At the same time, Lefar mentioned that a software or phone company may want to partner with Vonage to access its technology, but did not say whether a partnership or acquisition are indeed being discussed.

A possibility of this is strong, as Vonage hired Amichay Oren in May as their VP of Research and development. Oren is experienced in creating start-up companies with new services. Another current project Lefar revealed is a service that lets family members share a phone number across different devices and locations, though details were not discussed.

Vonage already offers an iPhone app and other smartphone services. [via BusinessWeek]

    "Back" to profitability?

Getting "back" to profitability implies that you were once profitable. Vonage has lost over $700 million since 2006, and has never made a profit, so how can they get "back" to profitability?

    Improve Mobile VoIP

Vonage introduced unlimited calls to several countries for a monthly fee. Their service was so bad, that it did not make any sense to continue beyond the first month. Vonage had a captive market when they started. However, they just did not know how to utilize that captive market.
