iPhone 4 ATT units go online ahead of time
One of the iPhone 4 owners who received a unit early has managed to get his unit activated with AT&T and has posted test photos and video from the phone's camera. Apart from validating the very high-resolution screen, the samples provide a more detailed impression of the image quality than a Czech leak from earlier. Photos from the camera show that it still behaves like a typical point-and-shoot outdoors, risking the possibility of blown-out highlights, but also show that the flash works and isn't as over-bright as on phones like the HTC Evo 4G.
Video samples also show that the phone produces particularly high quality 720p footage. Unlike some phones, which sacrifice the bitrate to achieve HD, video from the iPhone 4 shows few of the visual artfacts seen on other phones, such as blurring, blockiness or hitching frames. A unique twist shows that the phone will record vertical HD video when held upright; most phones either require shooting in landscape to get the full resolution or will shoot the same aspect ratio regardless of how the phone is held.
Alongside the new samples, another early adopter, Gil Cabrera, has posted video of his unboxing of the iPhone 4 to both give a sense of the device and to compare it against the existing iPhone.
