Gateway rolls slim ID notebooks, new LTs

Gateway ID brings aluminum, Optimus
Gateway today signaled the rare start to a new notebook line that also takes it further upscale. The ID series is thinner and lighter than Gateway's usual with an aluminum lid both keeping the systems one inch thick and the weight down to as little as 5.1 pounds. NVIDIA's Optimus graphics technology also makes a debut as some models can switch between Intel graphics and a GeForce GT 330M on the fly to focus on either battery life or speed.
A unique multi-touch trackpad appears like glass when it's unlit and will glow when it's touched. Battery life is relatively long at about six hours.
The line starts at $680 for a 14-inch ID49 with a 2.26GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and Intel video. Just one 15.6-inch model is available at $800, but it upgrades to a 2.26GHz Core i5 in addition to the larger screen.
Simultaneous with the new full-size notebooks is a redesign of the LT series of netbooks. Now called the LT23 line, the 10-inch portables get a more polished design of their own with a matte, patterned finish. The refresh picks up a 1.66GHz Atom N450, as much as 250GB of storage and eight hours of battery life. An entry system costs $330 with a 160GB disk.
