Nokia N8 to be last Nseries with Symbian?

At an Australian press event on Wednesday, Nokia showed off its flagship N8 smartphone. Company spokespeople in attendance have purportedly revealed that the device will be the last Nseries phone to run on the company's Symbian platform. All future handsets will be powered by the MeeGo platform developed in conjunction with Intel, they said.

The decision would leave Symbian on the Nokia X- and E-series devices, while a budget-oriented C-series should use the older still Series 40 OS. The first Nokia device to ship with MeeGo should be the N9, which may be released before year's end. The N8 ships later in the summer and may not be ready until late August. [via CNET]

Nokia needs to get it right

I am unhappy with this step of Nokia's. They got their strategy completely wrong and now blaming on OS which maybe partially true. What i wanted to see more in Nokia phones is better processing power + more features. OS is nice simple to use but lacks more sw & games. What is best about Nokia phones is contact & sms management and the best thing is they have managed to bring all latest features in smartphone in bar model. What i dont like in other cell phones is the touch screen interface. I personally dont like to use touch screen as i use my phone in rough and tough manner. Buttons r comfortable, quick, fast and i can type using buttons without looking at the screen in style.. I want to see more bar models from nokia with support of DVB-t analog-tv & new mobile processor.

The biggest mistake u did was use of old or outdated technology with high end prices

    Incorrect info

Nokia has made further clarifications emphasizing Symbian remains its OS of choice for smartphones. You seem to confuse the Symbian transition from 3 to 4 with the end of Symbian on the N-series. No, Nokia has kept it options open recognizing the full capabilities of Symbian^4 as a top OS for its premium smartphones. The distinction seems to have been lost with Meego, which remains Nokia's OS of choice to its computer tablets. The N9 is a hand held computer tablet with full smartphone capabilities, not just a smartphone. It can well be the the current N8's successor is a Symbian^4 smartphone or even dual boot Symbian/Meego device.

The bottom line is Symbian^3 will remain supported within Nokia's deep portfolio. Current and future applications shared amongst the Symbian^3, ^4 and Meego OS's will remain compatible within the Qt development framework.

The strategy is certainly more complex than a one product, one OS approach. But it is not confusing.
