Virgin US MiFi to share connections on cheap

Virgin Mobile USA today became one of the rare North American carriers to offer Novatel's MiFi with prepaid data. Much like its USB modems, Virgin's MiFi will only require data by the bucket rather than a recurring rate; users can get as little as 100MB of data for a short 10-day stint at $10 or as much as 5GB of data for a full month at $60. The MiFi still shares its connection with as many as five devices over Wi-Fi.

The option is a potential solution for those with computers, iPads and otherwise more than one data-only device they want to get online but who only occasionally need 3G access, such as on a business trip.

Buying the MiFi itself costs $150, but it goes contract-free and can have its data topped up by prepaid cards instead of having to use traditional direct payments. Virgin, Best Buy and Radio Shack will have the mobile route available on June 28. [via Gearlog]
