iPhone 4 selling out, could top 1.5 million in one weekend

Analyst sees stores already out of iPhone 4 stock

Apple is selling iPhone 4s quickly enough that some stores have already sold out before the end of the day, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster discovered today. A check in the morning found that nine of 20 Apple stores had already exhausted their stock, and all others expected to clear theirs by the end of the day. Earlier iPhone launches have usually taken a full weekend before significant sellouts.

Munster also saw Apple selling many more iPhones than it has in the past. Assuming Apple reserved about half its total launch supply for those who hadn't pre-ordered, Munster expected to see at least one million and as many as 1.5 million iPhones sell this weekend. The low end would match Apple's previous best, with the iPhone 3GS, and so any higher sales would automatically make the iPhone 4 launch a new record.

To maintain its edge in the market, Apple may still need to maintain an extremely quick pace after the sales rush cools down. It would need to beat Android's 160,000 phones per day, which could amount to 4.8 million phones per month. Traditionally, Apple has seen its long-term sales only go up in the months following, especially as it brings extra countries and carriers online.

    500k typical 3-day weekend

So if roughly half a million is typical for an android 3 day period, that puts it in perspective, but 1.5 million is still fantastic.

Long term is more important, we'll have to check in July at the numbers, maybe thats not fair with Droid X releasing in July, but then again, they release a phone every month, so what ya gonna do.

That's all Apple could sell in a couple of days...

I think the reason is because the iPhone 4 doesn't support Flash. Analysts will be rather disappointed and downgrade shares.

So, is Munster considering the 'weekend' to be just the weekend, or is he counting Friday and Thursday as well?

    Misleading article is misleading.

    Odd article…

Android selling 160k devices a day… So surely to make a true comparison you need to look at how many devices are now on iOS4? Because we are talking about OSs…! So the Apple number would include all those 3GS / 3G / and iPod Touch devices too.

Otherwise, if we want to compare phone sales against other phone sales then a truer comparison would be how many of the latest moto in comparison… or HTC etc…

    Misleading article is misleading.

    1.5 million TODAY

If you look at all the pre-order numbers and the massive lines, my guess... and I doubt it's much of a stretch... is Apple will sell that many TODAY.

I bet they double that number over the weekend.
