Chrome OS getting updates, simplified interface

Work on the upcoming Chrome OS is progressing along significantly, and the software has been given some simplification tweaks. Its design has been changed up to include less clutter and users can browse the web without logging into a Google account. There is also a new optional side bar that replaces the tabs atop Chrome and includes the same time, battery, and Wi-Fi indicators at the bottom edge, along with a smiley face that could be related to an IM feature of some sort.

Otherwise, Google is in heavy deliberations regarding including the unzipping of files, testing the feature and with many in the company believing it's a necessity. It's also said that Chrome OS will have screen savers and a screen locker for securing a workstation when they're away. Testing on Chromium OS is being done internally on machines being called Dogfood Device, referring to having to eat your own dogfood to prove a product works.

Simple games will also be a big part of Chrome OS, with proposed kinds that include Solitaire, Poker, Tower defense, a color flood game, a Minesweeper-style game, Sudoku and a Bejeweled-like game.

The OS its expected launch in the fall. [via TechCrunch]
