Rare, discontinued Palm Foleo up for sale on eBay
A unit of Palm’s Foleo smartphone companion, since cancelled by the company, has showed up for sale on eBay. The Buy It Now auction has ended, but the device was being sold for $750 by Ixle, who used the Foleo to blog. It's not clear whether the device sold or Ixle took it down and kept it, as he was uncertain about getting rid of it.
Bids were only up to about $52 with about two and a half days left to go despite the amount of unreleased content on the device. Ixle's Foleo had nearly every available app for it installed, including a web browser, Office document editors, viewers, games, financial apps and more.
The Foleo resembleed a 10-inch netbook and was powered by Linux, but it wasn't intended as a fully independent device. It could edit Microsoft Office documents, check messages or browse the web through Opera. Palm had intended it to sync with a smartphone and would borrow that device's connection, or its own Wi-Fi, to get online. A USB port, an SD card slot and a headphone jack were also part of the design. The stillborn Foleo's price was expected to be $500 after a $100 discount.
Palm killed the Foleo after Jon Rubinstein joined the company as it saw a companion device taking attention away from the core phone line. [via SlashGear]
