HDBaseT finalizes tech specs for new HD standard
The six-month old HDBaseT Alliance has finalized technical specifications for its A/V cable standard called HDBaseT, which it hopes will replace the HDMI standard. It would carry signals over standard Cat 5e/6 Ethernet network cables as long as 328 feet. The format could also mix data and video, as it could take HD and 3D video signals in addition to a regular 100Mbps network.
Added networking capabilities would allow DVRs and HTPCs to output video to any TV in the house. The devices could be connected like a daisy-chain or in a star configuration. As even power can be transmitted through the cable, this could lead to TVs that only require one input cable.
HDBaseT is comprised of LG, Samsung, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor. The first hardware devices that support the standard are expected to reach stores late this year, though the alliance doesn't expect significant adoption rates until sometime in 2011. [via NewTeeVee]
