Popbox finally launching this month

Syabas has established a concrete ship date for the Popbox. The media hub should ship on July 23. It was originally due to ship July 4, but the company had decided that the software to go with the firmware "wasn’t quite where we wanted it" and held off for nearly three weeks. Pre-orders had already begun in May.

In addition to the hardware, Syabas also outlined the initial apps, or Popapps, that should come with the set-top box on launch day. Google's Picasa and YouTube will be the headlining options, but other major additions will bring Photobucket and Twitter as well as podcast viewing from Next New Networks and Revision3.

When it ships, the Popbox will cost either $130 for an Ethernet version and $150 for one with Wi-Fi. Either will support many of the same formats as the earlier Popcorn Hour but will require an HDTV and support newer features, up to 3D visuals using RealD.
