Acer to take turn at dual Atom netbook

Acer is about to follow ASUS' Eee PC 1215N with a dual-core netbook of its own, based on newly escaped details. The Aspire One D255 would carry an Atom N550 with each core running at 1.5GHz. Not much is known on the inside, but it would have features similar to the D260 and some cosmetic tweaks, such as new colors and less chrome trim.

The N550 could be mated to Intel's slow integrated graphics versus the Eee PC's NVIDIA Ion hardware, but it could last much longer on battery as the N550 is designed from the start for netbook limits where the ASUS system is using processors normally meant for nettops that can afford to use more power. Both should be much faster for running background apps or any process that can use multiple cores.

Release info hasn't been given out, though the processor-oriented upgrade could hint at a quick turnaround. [via Macles]
